At the German School Nairobi, democracy is more than a concept, it’s something we live every day.
Each year, students in Grades 5 to 12 elect their representatives, who bring forward ideas and concerns in school conferences, working groups and in dialogue with the school leadership.
The Student Parliament, made up of the elected student representatives and all class representatives, meets regularly to discuss topics from everyday school life. These range from sustainability and school events to questions about the cafeteria or digital learning.
The Student Council is supported by our trusted teacher mentors, who guide and encourage students in developing and implementing their ideas and projects.
Together, they show how participation, responsibility and engagement are lived at DSN, true to our motto: Your Voice Matters.

The Primary Student Council, affectionately known as the Mini SV, gives students in Grades 1 to 4 a voice and the opportunity to experience democratic participation from an early age.
Each year, every class elects one girl and one boy as class representatives. The representatives from Grades 2 to 4 meet every four weeks to discuss topics and ideas from their classes. In the second half of the school year, the class representatives from Grade 1 also join the meetings.
Supported by our school social worker, Kerstin Krohmer, students learn to take responsibility, treat one another with respect, include others and act as role models.
The meetings take place in a positive and supportive atmosphere where democratic values, rights and responsibilities are explored and where open exchange is both meaningful and enjoyable.
